One person taken to hospital after two-car crash closes road during rush hour

One person has been taken to hospital after a two-car crash in Dunston during rush hour.

Two cars, including a silver Citroën, crashed on the A1114 Colliery Road outside the Tudor Rose pub just after 5pm on Tuesday.

Police, paramedics and two fire engines were called to the scene and the road was closed between Kingfisher Court and Festival Way.

One person was reported trapped in their car and fire crews from Swalwell and Ryehill stations helped in the rescue.

The ambulance service then took one person to the Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital in Gateshead and another was treated on the scene.

The cars were cleared and the road was reopened just before 6pm.

During the road closure, buses heading to and from the Metrocentre were diverted and were caught up in delays as drivers used alternative routes.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 5.04pm to a two-vehicle road traffic collision outside the Tudor Rose pub.

"One person was trapped, fire brigade and police were in attendance.

"We sent an ambulance, a Hazardous Area Response Team vehicle and a rapid response vehicle.

"One person was treated at the scene and another has just been taken to the QE."
