One person taken to hospital after tumble dryer fire at Byker care home

One person was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation following a fire at a care home.

The blaze broke out at Byker Hall Care Home, on Allendale Road, in Newcastle, just before 3pm on Friday.

Firefighters say it was caused due to a tumble dryer overheating.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 2.57pm and we sent two crews from Byker and one from Newcastle Central to a residential care home on Allendale Road.

"The fire was caused due to an overheating tumble dryer.

"On arrival, fire crews gave oxygen therapy to one person, who was then taken to hospital by paramedics as a precaution.

"There was smoke damage to a laundry room. The rest of the property was unaffected."

The North East Ambulance Service was also called to the scene.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.17pm on Friday to a private residency on Allendale Road, in Byker.

"We requested support from the British Red Cross service and one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with smoke inhalation."
