One person taken to hospital after six-vehicle crash near Angel of the North

One person has been taken to hospital after a crash involving six vehicles on the A1 southbound.

Police received a report of a collision near the Angel of the North on Thursday morning.

Two lanes on the A1 southbound were closed as emergency services attended the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9.30am today (Thursday) we received a report of a collision involving six vehicles on the A1 southbound near the Angel of the North.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance.

"Motorists are advised there will be increased congestion in the area.”

Paramedics called to the scene transported one person to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and discharged five other patients at the scene.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.22am to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the A1 southbound at Low Eighton.

"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a rapid response paramedic, three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, and an officer, who assessed and discharged five patients on scene and transported one patient to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

The two lanes on the A1 have since reopened.
