One person taken to hospital after serious collision in Birtley

One person was taken to hospital following a serious crash in Birtley.

Police cordoned off Portobello Road in Birtley, Gateshead, for several hours on Thursday evening following the incident.

Parademics rushed to the scene, while a Great North Air Ambulance helicopter was also called.

It's understood a motorcyclist was involved in the collision.

Images from the scene show glass from a bus shelter smashed and spread across a section of the road.

Buses in the area were diverted after the crash, which took place just before 4.45pm.

There was also disruption around Portmeads Road and Birtley Lane.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.43 pm to a road traffic collision on Portobello Road in Birtley.

"We dispatched three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, two ambulance crews and an officer.

"We transported one patient to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

Northumbria Police has been contacted for comment.
