One person taken to hospital after five-vehicle crash on A19

One person has been taken to hospital after a five-vehicle crash on the A19.

The incident happened on the northbound lane just before the A690 turnoff at around 5pm on Tuesday.

Motorists faced delays of up to 40 minutes due to one lane being blocked, while there were reports of queues southbound due to traffic slowing down to look.

The North East Ambulance Service sent a rapid response team to the scene.

A spokesperson for NEAS said: "One patient was transferred to South Tyneside Hospital."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "There were five vehicles involved. It was one vehicle shunted into another, then another. All injuries appear to be minor."

All lanes were reopened at around 7pm.

Motorists also faced delays on the A19 at the A1231 Sunderland Highway Roundabout.

A broken down lorry blocked one lane and caused queuing traffic.
