One person hospitalised and house badly damaged following early-morning fire in Cleland

Emergency services struggled to reach an early-morning fire in Cleland because of icy road conditions.

Firefighters tackled the blaze in Scarhill Street having been called at approximately 6.20am on Monday morning.

One individual was taken to University Hospital Wishaw while the house has been left badly damaged.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “SFRS were called to a property in Scarhill Street, Cleland, at around 6.18am on Monday, January 4, with two appliances in attendance.

“The appliances left the incident shortly before 10.30am. We can confirm there was one casualty who went to University Hospital Wishaw for treatment.”

Residents had voiced concerns that fire crews were struggling to reach the blaze due to the treacherous conditions on the roads.

One woman, who lives in the town, said: “The conditions are really treacherous up there.

“The fire engines couldn’t get up Gorsehall Street or Fraser Street because of the conditions on the roads.”

The icy conditions also caused headaches for road users.

One bus route, the 242 service, was suspended in an area of Wishaw due to road conditions.

First Glasgow tweeted: “Due to poor road conditions we are currently unable to service Pather and will terminate at the community centre.”

NL Leisure also stated that all outside facilities at Wishaw Sports Centre were closed until further notice due to the weather.
