Gunman kills four and injures eight in shooting at Michigan church

A gunman opened fire inside a Michigan church on Sunday before apparently setting the building on fire, killing at least four people and injuring eight others, US authorities said.

Police Chief William Renye informed reporters that a 40-year-old man crashed his car into the front entrance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, where hundreds of people had gathered inside, before getting out and opening fire on the worshippers.

The suspect is believed to have set the church on fire before police shot him, Renye said.

“We do believe we will find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was,” Renye said. “Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peace-making, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement that her "heart is breaking" for the Grand Blanc community. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” she said.

Investigation under way

Police said they did not yet have a motive for the arson or shooting attack, but said investigators are searching the suspect’s residence in nearby Burton.

US President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he was briefed about the shooting. The FBI has sent some 100 agents to the area.

Meanwhile, Doug Anderson, a spokesperson for the Utah-based church, condemned the shooting.

“The church is in communication with local law enforcement as the investigation continues and as we receive updates on the condition of those affected,” Anderson said in a statement.

The church, circled by a parking lot and a large lawn, is located near residential areas and a Jehovah’s Witness temple.

The shooting occurred the morning after Russell M Nelson, the oldest-ever president of the Mormon church, died at 101. The next leader is expected to be Dallin H Oaks.
