Woman's body found after house collapse leaves scene of devastation in village

A woman has died following a suspected explosion and house collapse in Bury.

Emergency services were called to East View in Summerseat at around 9.20pm on Wednesday night (February 17).

Local residents reported hearing a 'loud bang' on Wednesday night.

A major emergency response from Greater Manchester Fire Service, GMP and North West Ambulance Service was quickly prompted.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed a woman's body has been found in the wreckage.

A woman and a child were taken to hospital for minor injuries, police said.

Three other people were treated by paramedics at the scene.

They were not believed to be seriously hurt.

Five properties had to be evacuated on Wednesday night as a precaution, GMP confirmed.

A joint investigation has been launched by police, Greater Manchester Fire Service and the local authority.

A police presence remained at the property on Thursday morning, with the road leading to East View blocked off by officers.

Cadent gas officials could be seen assessing the scene, with a strong smell of gas reported in the area.

Forensic officers were also spotted searching the area, with a forensic tent stationed nearby to the scene.

Pictures show what little is left of the terraced house in question, which has been severely damaged by reported explosion.

A spokesperson for A spokesperson for GMP said: "Officers responding to reports of a collapsed house in Ramsbottom have sadly found the body of a woman.

"Emergency services were called just before 9.30pm last night (Wednesday 17 February 2021) to reports that a house had collapsed on East View in Summerseat.

"Five properties were evacuated as a precaution and a small scene remains in place.

"A woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Three people were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries. A woman and a child were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"A joint investigation is currently underway between GMP, GMFRS and Bury local authority partners.
