One-off women's Test: Australia thrash England for historic Ashes whitewash

NEW DELHI: Australia completed a historic women's Ashes whitewash on Saturday, defeating England by an innings and 122 runs in a one-off pink ball Test.

The hosts ended the visitors' terrifying tour with a three-day triumph in the first women's Test played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground since 1949.

All series, Australia was in a class of their own, further widening the divide between the two teams.

Three ODIs, three T20s, and the one Test that made up the multi-format Ashes, which has been point-based since 2013, were all won by them-two for a white-ball victory and four for a Test.

As it was the first time either team had scored a whitewash, Australia was able to maintain their firm hold on the Ashes, which they won on English soil in 2015 and have held ever since.

Following their all-format tour of South Africa last month, in which they won six of seven games, England arrived in high spirits.

However, an Australian team with far more depth and strength slowly wore them down.

On a disastrous day two, England missed a stumping and dropped eight catches after being dismissed for 170 in Melbourne.

On the strength of Beth Mooney's tough 106 and Annabel Sutherland's magnificent 163, it enabled the hosts to amass 440.

In a match commemorating the 90th anniversary of the first women's Test, which was contested between Australia and England in Brisbane in 1934, Australia then bowled England out in the last session of day three to finish the rout.
