One of world's most luxurious trains is coming to Dumbarton

Railway fans are in for a treat when one of the world’s most luxurious trains makes two visits to Dumbarton on the same weekend next month.

The Northern Belle, Britain’s version of the Orient Express, will set off from the town for slap-up lunch trips to the West Highlands on August 17 and 18.

The train with its seven ornately-decorated 1930s-style Pullman carriages was recently hauled by the famous Flying Scotsman locomotive.

But it is understood it will be pulled by a heritage diesel engine on the two Dumbarton excursions.

Jeanette Snape, Northern Belle’s managing director, said: “Our train will not only take people for a scenic round trip through the West Highlands – it will also transport them back to the golden days of rail travel.

“The time when nothing was too good for the passengers.”

Liveried stewards will welcome passengers on board with a glass of champagne before they tuck into a seven-course lunch with wine during the eight-hour round trip.

The train is scheduled to leave Dumbarton on both days at 10am and arrive back at 6pm.

Tickets for the journey cost £250 each.
