One of Welsh rugby's big summer signings set for loan deal with English giants after flopping at Scarlets

The Scarlets are set to loan Clayton Blommetjies to Leicester Tigers until the end of the season.

The South African arrived in Llanelli from the Cheetahs last summer amid hopes that he would contribute back-three sparks for Wayne Pivac’s side.

But the script hasn’t gone to plan and the man from Western Province has been taking the field for Llanelli RFC instead of the Scarlets in 2019.

Now it seems he is likely to pitch up at Welford Road on a short-term loan arrangement. A picture of Blommetjies in a Tigers top has appeared on social media and the deal is poised to go ahead.

The switch will suit the Scarlets.

They have plenty of back-three options in Johnny McNicholl, Leigh Halfpenny, Steff Evans, Ioan Nicholas, Tom Prydie and Ryan Conbeer, meaning Blommetjies would only be kicking his heels if he were to stick around.

And Leicester evidently need extra cover as they seek to chase away the threat of relegation from the Gallagher Premiership.

Blommetjies will doubtless just be pleased to be playing again.

He started the Scarlets’ opening game of the season, against Ulster, but has featured in run-on sides just twice since for the region, also making three appearances off the bench.

Wayne Pivac initially suggested he wanted to get the former Cheetahs player in shape but Blommetjies hasn’t been helped by the odd injury.

If the deal goes through, it could be a chance for him to belatedly kick-start his season.

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne has also switched from the Scarlets on a temporary basis, with the scrum-half signing a loan deal with Harlequins for the rest of the season.
