One of Welsh rugby's big summer signings has had his contract terminated already after disastrous 2018/19 season

The Scarlets have released Clayton Blommetjies after one season, electing to pay him out of the final year of his contract in west Wales.

The 28-year-old failed to make any sort of impact at the region, featuring in just six matches before being shipped out on loan to Leicester Tigers in the second half of the season.

Formerly of the Cheetahs, Blommetjies caught the eye at times shortly after the South African franchises joined the Welsh, Scottish and Irish in the league.

It was enough for the Scarlets to take a punt on the full-back but it proved to be hasty decision and things haven't worked out.

Explaining his absence last year, ex-Scarlets boss Wayne Pivac raised question marks over his fitness levels.

"We do things a bit differently from the Cheetahs and expectation on the players is to be in a certain shape and Clayton has a bit of work to do in that area," Pivac at the start of last season.

His limited gametime would suggest he never reached satisfactory levels of fitness and it seems the region had lost patience.

There is nothing official from the region just yet, but Blommetjies says he has been shown the door down and is now scrambling to find an employer next season.

"I did my job, I did what they asked of me," Blommetjies told South Africa news outlet Netwerk24.

"They are going to pay out the year of my contract and my agent is looking for me elsewhere.

"I was sad when I heard the bad news a few days ago. It hurt, but I am patiently waiting for my agent to try something for me.

"My wife and child enjoyed it there, so it is just so sad to hear that we won't go back."

Blommetjies went on to suggest he would be keen to get another club outside of South Africa, alluding to the financial benefits of getting a job overseas.

But he laughed off suggestions that Japan was on the cards, insisting he has nothing on the table at the moment.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Scarlets announced the signing of Wales international Tom James, who will bolster the back three stocks at Parc y Scarlets.
