One of Wales' top Michelin-starred restaurants The Walnut Tree is shutting temporarily because of staff shortages

A Michelin-starred restaurant has been forced to temporarily close because of a shortage of staff.

Shaun Hill, head chef and owner of the The Walnut Tree in Llanddewi Skirrid near Abergavenny, announced in a tweet on Saturday, July 24, that the inn would be closing the following week.

He blamed the closure on "very few crew" and said he had relied on just three members of staff rather than the usual eight.

Mr Hill assured his customers that he would reopen on August 4 with the help of an old colleague.

On its website, the restaurant brands itself as "a food-lovers destination since the early 1960s".

An appearance on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares in 2004 saw the restaurant temporarily close in 2007. Mr Hill took over the restaurant in 2008 from its previous owners Francesco and Enrica Mattioli. He restored its reputation, earning it the title of best restaurant in Britain in 2009.

It is described an "iconic restaurant with an illustrious past" by the Michelin Guide, with a stunning location "in the rolling borders of Wales". In 2014 it was named the Best Restaurant in Wales by industry insiders and came 14th overall at the National Restaurant Awards.
