One of Wales' best-known fish and chip shops has closed down

An award-winning chip shop has closed the doors of one of its branches so the owner can concentrate on making his other site "the best in Wales".

The Crispy Cod, in Tonyrefail , closed its doors on Saturday, July 6, despite recently being named the best chippy in Wales .

It was the third time the company won best in Wales and third time they'd been in the UK top 10 at the National Fish and Chip Awards.

Due to the closure of the Tonyrefail shop, which opened more than 10 years ago, The Crispy Cod in Gelli will now open on Sundays too, meaning the chippy will now be open seven days a week.

The owner of The Crispy Cod, Mathew Williams, cited issues with footfall and expansion for closing the shop.

"The dynamics have changed, unfortunately," said Mr Williams. "In Tonyrefail, they just come off the motorway, go to Tesco and go straight home.

"And that's what it is; it's a footfall issue."

He added: "It's also expansion. The sort of business we are - we're all about quality.

"And to give the quality we want to give, when you start expanding, things get weaker.

"If you'd asked me two years ago, I wanted 10 shops. Now, my attitude is I want one shop and I want it to be the best.

"You go to all these big chains, you don't get a personal service. You come to The Crispy Cod, you get a personal service.

"We've kept that, but the thing is, it's difficult to do that. We've got amazing staff, but I think the customers expect to see me in the business and I can't be in 10 places at one time.

"My background, working in Michelin-star and top-end restaurants, is perfection. And if you're not in one place, the other place isn't perfection."

Mr Williams added: "I want to concentrate on Gelli; make Gelli the best fish and chip shop in Wales exactly like Tonyrefail was."
