One of the world's oldest optical illusions; how many animals do you see?

Hidden within the Airavatesvara Temple in Thanjavur, a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, lies a nearly nine-hundred-year-old optical illusion that continues to baffle viewers. Can you spot both animals in this carving?

This ancient image, intricately carved in stone, showcases an elephant and a bull. The Airavatesvara Temple believed to have been constructed in the late 12th century, is considered the world's oldest optical illusion.

In this mesmerizing optical illusion, it appears that the figures possess separate bodies, but they share the same head, which intriguingly combines the features of a cow and an elephant. This optical illusion has also captivated the online world and provides insights into one's personality based on what they spot first.

For those who first identify the bull, traits associated with them include being "faithful, stubborn, fierce, strong, and positive." On the other hand, those who spot the elephant initially are characterized as calm, kind, thoughtful, considerate, loyal, and intelligent.

If you're struggling to discern one of the creatures, try covering the body of one to reveal the other. To help you further, the bull raises its head towards the sky on the left-hand side, while the elephant looks forward on the right.

Notably, the bull is named "Nandi," representing the sacred vehicle of "Lord Shiva," while the elephant, Airavat, symbolizes the divine mount of Lord Indra, the king of heaven. Both hold significant roles in Hindu mythology.

The Chola dynasty, reigning during the 12th century in India, witnessed the creation of temples with Dravidian architecture and intricately carved decorations depicting chariots and avatars. So, were you able to spot these two distinct animals in the picture? If you succeed, congratulations on your keen eyesight. If not, worry not, as there are more optical illusions to explore on our site, allowing you to practice and enjoy this captivating art form.
