One of the world's best pizzerias has opened a stunning restaurant in Manchester

It's the Italian restaurant known as one of the "world's best pizzerias" - and now L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele has opened its first restaurant here in Manchester.

The pizzeria, which was first opened in Naples in Italy back in 1870, is world-renowned for its margherita and marinara pizzas.

Now, it has quietly opened in a truly stunning former bank building on Manchester's King Street.

Taking over the site which had briefly been previously occupied by Zizzi, L'Antica is serving up a full menu of pizza and pasta treats, as well as a range of signature cocktails from its eye-popping pink marble topped bar.

The impressive architecture of the bank is a real feature here, with the stunning arched roof with rose stained glass windows echoed in the blush pink seating and neons that the new restaurant has fashioned inside.

There are also bold neon slogans adorning the mirrored walls including: "I want someone to look at me the same way I look at pizza".

There are a range of seating options, including intimate tables underneath white blossom trees, plush booths for larger groups as well as more formal banqueting tables for much larger parties.

L'Antica is known for "serving the best pizza in Naples" which, being the home of pizza, is considered just about the highest acclaim you can get.

It was founded in 1870 by the Condurro family, with the pizza tradition carried forward by Michele Condurro who opened his first restaurant in 1906.

His face remains as the emblem for the restaurant, and features on the menus and even the napkins.

The secret to the success of the restaurant is said to be in the old time-honoured tradition of leavening pizza dough and only using natural ingredients in both the pizza and the toppings.

On the menu here in Manchester you'll be able to get the venue's "famous" double cheese margherita for £11.90, and their equally famous marinara (that's a cheese-free pizza with tomato sauce, oregano, garlic and seed soy oil) for £8.90.

There's also a calzone for £13.90, napoletana £12.90 and a deep-fried pizza boasting ciccioli (pressed pork) salami Napoli and ricotta for £13.90.

There's also a full range of pasta dishes, including a signature carbonara for £13.90, truffle ravioli for £19.90 and linguine lobster at £25.90.

The original restaurant is also featured in the Michelin Guide, hailed "one of the oldest and best pizzerias in Naples".

But while in Naples there is famously a no-reservations policy, with instead large queues forming outside every night, here in Manchester bosses say they are "welcoming reservations" after quietly opening up in the city this week.

The Manchester launch comes after the success of openings in London in recent years.

The Pizzeria da Michele restaurant is open daily on King Street 11am until 11pm week nights, and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
