'One of the best defenders we've had' - Sunderland fans react to Dion Sanderson injury news

Sunderland fans have taken to social media to send Dion Sanderson messages of support after the Wolves loanee was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The defender has been one of the standout players since Lee Johnson arrived on Wearside and cemented his place in the Black Cats back four following an injury crisis.

Lee Johnson confirmed today that the 21-year-old is set to be out for around six weeks with a back problem, meaning he will miss Sunderland's three remaining League One games and any play-off fixtures.

It's a major blow for the Black Cats who already missing Jordan Willis, Arbenit Xhemajli, Tom Flanagan and Conor McLaughlin through injuries.

Sanderson thanked fans in a message on social media, he tweeted: "With a heavy heart I have to say I am unable to play for the remainder of the season due to injury.

"I would like to thank the manager the players and the fantastic fans. I wish you all the best and will be supporting you all the way. Ha’way the lads."
