One of Stockport's oldest and best-loved curry houses has closed

One of Stockport's longest-established and best-loved curry houses has closed after 48 years.

Kushoom Koly in Heaton Moor opened in 1971 and has been one of the neighbourhood's most popular dining spots ever since.

The family-run restaurant, known to locals as The Kush, shut quietly over a week ago and owner Faruk Uddin has now confirmed it is closed for good.

Faruk, who ran the restaurant with brothers Sami and Abbo, said he was taking some time out to mourn the loss of his son Jordan, who died in February.

Jordan died in hospital after being hit by a car on Stockport Road in Levenshulme in the early hours of Valentine's Day. He was an organ donor and his family honoured his decision to give the gift of life to others.

Paying tribute to the 26-year-old at the time, his family described him as a 'sensitive and kind soul' who was 'always looking after others and wanted everyone to be happy'.

They said: "Jordan was a sensitive and kind soul who was always looking after others and wanted everyone to be happy.

"He was a cheeky and quirky young man who enjoyed being outdoors and active, particularly if it involved martial arts," they said.

"Jordan’s desire to look after others has continued even after his passing, as he made the decision that he wanted his organs to be donated in the event of his death.

"Honouring his decision was incredibly difficult for us but we are so glad that we did as organ donation is extremely important and we are so proud of our boy for making this decision so that others could have a chance at life.

"He is a brother, son and friend who will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have him in their lives."

Faruk and his family's hospitality saw the Kushoom Koly marked out by the M.E.N as one of Greater Manchester's top curry houses in 2014.

"Whether you’re a first time customer or a loyal regular, owner Faruk will welcome you like an old friend as soon as you set foot through the door," we wrote.

"Running the place alongside his brothers Sami and Abbo, it’s a real family affair - and you’ll leave feeling like you’ve become part of it."

Faruk said he hoped to open 'a little Kushoom Koly II' in the Heatons in the not too distant future.

A fundraiser has been set up in memory of Jordan for mental health charity Mind. Donations can be made here .
