One of Scotland's richest men escapes driving ban after speeding in flash £57k Mercedes

One of Scotland's richest men has escaped a driving ban after being clocked speeding in his  £57,000 Mercedes.

Multi-millionaire hospitality group owner Stefan King was clocked speeding in his car with a distinctive personalised number plate.

King, who owns the G1 group of bars and clubs and is reputed to be worth more than  £50 million, was caught speeding at nearly twice the limit.

The 58-year-old tycoon, from Glasgow, admitted speeding on 28 December last year.

He pled guilty at Perth's Justice of the Peace Court to driving at 50 mph on the A977 Kinross to Kincardine road at Crook of Devon.

The court heard the quiet country road had a 30 mph speed limit at the point where King was caught driving through the village in his nearly new Mercedes V250.

King, who pled guilty by letter, had three points imposed upon his driving licence and was fined  £200.

The G1 Group has been described as Scotland's largest hospitality group, with more than 50 venues dotted across the country.

The group has made a series of redundancies this year and blamed the Covid pandemic and lockdown for the projected loss of  £25m revenue.

King has run the group since its launch with a Glasgow nightclub more than a quarter of a century ago and features on The Sunday Times rich list as one of the country's wealthiest businessmen.
