One of Manchester city centre's most prominent hotels is closing for good

One of the city centre's most prominent hotels is to close permanently this summer.

The Renaissance Manchester Hotel, which is part of the Marriott Group, has confirmed the news 'with great sadness'.

Owners of the hotel, on the corner of Deansgate and Blackfriars Street, said demand has been weakened by the travel restrictions implemented during the coronavirus pandemic.

It is expected to close its doors for good on July 15.

The four-star hotel is in a prominent location in the city centre, close to Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, and the Manchester Arena.

The Renaissance told the M.E.N: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm that the Renaissance Manchester Hotel is expected to permanently close around July 15 2020.

"Travel restrictions and social distancing efforts around the world have resulted in weaker demand and economic uncertainty.

"After evaluating all options for the property together with the hotel owner, the difficult decision has been made to permanently close the hotel."

The business has not confirmed how many employees will be left without jobs by the closure, but added: "The wellbeing of our associates is important to us and we are striving to proceed in the most thoughtful and respectful way possible.

"We will actively support each one of the impacted associates through this transition."

The building has long been labelled an 'eyesore' in the city centre and has faced demolition since 2018.

Plans were released last year for a five-star hotel, 600 upscale apartments and a new public courtyard, as well as waterfront walkways and restaurants, to replace the brutalist structure.

It's part of developer Urban & Civic's proposals for the Renaissance Hotel regeneration area.
