One of Gloucester Road's longest running shops is closing down

A fair trade shop which opened on Gloucester Road in 1996 is closing at the end of March.

Katze has been a mainstay on the independent road for an impressive 23 years but goes back even further than that, starting out as a stall in St Nicholas Market in 1980 before moving to a permanent site on Cheltenham Road, followed by Gloucester Road.

But after decades of trading, owner Terrii Telfer has decided to retire, meaning the popular shop will be no more after March 30.

The store, which stocks a wide range of ethical items including clothing, jewellery, cards, gifts and trinkets, is having a closing down sale with 50 per cent off much of its stock.

Terrii said she's looking forward to retiring so she can focus on writing her book all about her time in retail.

"Many of my customers started shopping at Katze when they were kids and now buy stuff for their grandchildren," said the 67-year-old.

"So quite a few of them have got quite teary when I've told them I'm closing.

"But to be honest I'm quite looking forward to retiring as I'm absolutely knackered - retail can be pretty exhausting, especially when you've been in it for as long as I have.

"I have had a pretty varied and interesting life thanks to this shop, including using it to promote Bristol's music scene and selling UV sticks and things like that in clubs in the 90s.

"I'm really looking forward to writing my book, having a bit of time off and I'd like to say a big thank you to all my customers who have popped in over the years."

Terrii was instrumental in bringing the fair trade shopping movement to the UK and stocks items which can't be found in many other places, which is why she built up a loyal following of customers.
