One of Cardiff's best-known restaurants closes due to staff Covid cases

One of Cardiff's best-known restaurants has been forced to shut its doors after shortages in staff due to positive Covid cases.

After closing on December 28, popular cafe and restaurant Milkwood in Pontcanna made the decision to close until January 5 after what they described as a "difficult time" for the hospitality industry.

With tighter measures brought into Wales on Boxing Day, the reintroduced "rule of six" and return of table service means more hospitality businesses rely on staff to adhere to the new rules.

Announcing the decision on social media, Milkwood revealed staffing issues arose after a number of confirmed Covid cases.

With questions being asked surrounding the support available, the popular venue described it as a "very challenging time for everyone in the hospitality industry".

It isn't the only restaurant in the area closed for staffing issues due to Covid, with Thomas in Pontcanna also making the difficult decision to close temporarily.

With a number of restaurants forced into an extended break, during arguably one of the busiest periods of the year, the issue has also been reported to affect businesses elsewhere.

In Swansea, The Bistro in Tycoch also revealed it would be closing its doors temporarily for similar reasons.

Despite having a number of bookings, which the popular wine bar and bistro apologised for, the venue announced it would have to close unexpectedly.

A statement from the venue said: "It would appear many other establishments are suffering the same, but I can confirm that 47 Bar & Lounge Sketty is still open.

"Thank you for all your support in 2021, it has been a successful year, happy new year, good health and to a better 2022. We will keep you advised of our opening celebrations."

Earlier this month it was announced that businesses in Wales hit by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant will be eligible for emergency financial support under a new Welsh Government support package.

Economy minister Vaughan Gething has announced the details of the £120 million funding, which will be available for retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism businesses and their supply chains.
