'One of a kind': Floral tributes left to 22-year-old motorcyclist who died after crash in Birtley

Flowers have been left in tribute to a 22-year-old motorcyclist who lost his life in a crash in Birtley.

Emergency services were called to a collision involving a motorbike and a pedestrian on Portobello Road, Gateshead, shortly after 4.40pm on Thursday.

On Friday police confirmed that the motorcyclist, a 22-year-old man, has died.

Now floral tributes have been left at the scene of the fatal crash in memory of the young man who died.

The colourful bouquets have been left at a tree close to where the fatal crash happened.

One message described the man as “one of a kind” and said he would be “massively missed”.

Another said: “You will never be forgotten.”

The man who died has not yet been named but officers have been supporting his family.

The Great North Air Ambulance and North East Ambulance Service were called but the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 41-year-old pedestrian was treated for minor injuries.

Police cordoned off the area for several hours following the collision and an investigation was launched. Officers are now appealing for information.

Sergeant Craig Bartle of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department, said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in a young man losing his life. Our specialist officers are currently offering his family support and we ask their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“Our investigation is still at an early stage and we have already carried out a number of enquiries but would ask anyone who was in the area at that time to contact us if they can offer any information that would assist.

"We would especially like to hear from any drivers that were travelling on Portobello Road at that time and may have dashcam footage, so that we can establish the circumstances of the collision."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police by calling 101 or using the 'Tell us Something' page on the Northumbria Police website, quoting log 811 15/4/21.
