'One-of-a-kind' Derry postal worker laid to rest as colleagues pay tribute

Tributes have flooded social media after the recent passing of Derry postal worker and CWU trade union representative Charlie Kelly.

Royal Mail workers drove through the streets of Derry as part of Charlie's funeral procession and formed a guard of honour in uniform as Charlie was laid to rest.

A loss felt throughout the city, many friends and colleagues took to social media to pay tribute to Charlie.

A local Royal Mail manager said: “Charlie was a massive character within the office over a number of years, and a great support and advocate for his colleagues throughout that period.

"We are all devastated at his passing, but I know Charlie would have appreciated the great send-off from his friends and colleagues at his funeral. Our heartfelt thoughts are with his wife Grace and the rest of his family at this difficult time."

Derry Trades Union Council said: "Charlie Kelly was a formidable and trustworthy trade union representative. Someone of whom you would have been fortunate to have had on your side at work and have been able to call upon if the need arose.

"Definitely one of a kind - someone who will be greatly missed by his work colleagues in the Derry Delivery Office, where he operated as CWU IR Representative. A huge loss to the trade union movement.

"Charlie Kelly’s colleagues in the CWU will be giving him a fitting send-off - a no-nonsense straight talker who got stuff done. Solidarity."

A colleague said on Facebook: "Rest easy Charlie Kelly. It was an absolute pleasure to work with you. You looked after everyone in there and had all our backs. Sleep tight big man. Look after your family in the sad times ahead."

Another said: "Just a few words to express my deepest sympathy to the wife and family of Charlie Kelly former CWU assistant secretary for the Northern Ireland West Branch. A great union man who will be sadly missed."

On the day of Charlie's funeral, a colleague said: "RIP Charlie Kelly. You would have been proud of all the Derry posties today. A send off only deserving of somebody like you. It’s safe to say you’ve made a lasting impression."

Commenting on the showing of support from Royal Mail workers to Charlie's family, former SDLP Derry Mayor Pat Ramsey said: "Very impressive indeed, and a well deserved honour to be acknowledged by so many.

"He was a hard working, conscientious and passionate union representative who stepped in and stood up for the many challenges facing local posties for decades. Thoughts and prayers with Grace and all the family."
