The world's only "miyama-kasumi-zakura" cherry tree was in full bloom Saturday at the Yamagata City Wildflower Park in Yamagata. The tree is expected to be in bloom until around Wednesday.
Park officials believe a miyama-zakura cherry tree and a kasumi-zakura cherry tree naturally crossbred and created a new seedling, which the officials discovered in 2004. The new tree was given the name miyama-kasumi-zakura in 2012. With white flowers that blossom alongside beautiful leaves, the tree is thought to be about 40-years-old.
"I got the timing right this year," said a 70-year-old woman from Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, who visits the park every spring. "I'm delighted I got to see it in full bloom."
The park is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last admission is at 4 p.m.). Admission for adults is 300 yen and those of high school age and below may enter for free.
