The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on Tuesday gave a one-month jail term to imprisoned Pongpat Chayaphan, ex-chief of the Central Investigation Bureau, for false asset declarations on land and condominiums.
The sentence brought his cumulative jail sentence to 36 years and three months.
A panel of nine Supreme Court judges handed down a two-month jail sentence after Pongpat did not want a lawyer. Since he confessed, the sentenced was commuted by half. The charge was brought against him by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).
According to the ruling, Pongpat was appointed as the commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau on Oct 1, 2010. On Oct 24, 2012, he failed to declare his 53 land plots and six condominium units in his asset declaration report to the NACC.
He admitted to the court that the land plots and condominiums belonged to him but he did not explain why he had failed to declare the assets.
Apart from the jail term, he was prohibited from holding governmental positions for five years from Nov 23, 2014, when he was arrested.
Speaking to reporters at the court on Chaeng Wattana Road, Pongpat thanked them for the news coverage and said he was in good health.
Pongpat, 64, faced seven criminal lawsuits in 2015 involving lese majeste, receiving bribes for police promotion and smuggled fuel, illegal casino operation, money-laundering, forest law violation, illegal possession of artefacts and reception of stolen property.
