The Olympic Games are set to open on July 23 in Tokyo. Nearly 70,000 visitors, including athletes, coaches and sport delegation members, are expected to arrive in Japan. The organisation of these Games has been difficult as the pandemic continues to spread around the world. While Japan has been less affected than most other rich countries, it has been comparatively slow to vaccinate its population.
After months of uncertainty, the Olympic organising committee has decided to cap attendances at events at 50 percent capacity or up to 10,000 people.
But one month ahead of the Games, the prospect of three weeks of sporting events is worrying many in Japan. Polls indicate as many as 80 percent of them want the Olympics to be cancelled or postponed again. Our correspondents report.
