One minute car journey takes almost an hour because of work on major Swansea road

A sixty second journey has been taking drivers almost an hour on one of Swansea 's busiest roads.

Drivers heading towards Mumbles have been met with long delays between Sketty Lane and Mayals Road as a new pedestrian crossing is installed.

The work is part of Swansea Council's active travel programme, which sees funding provided by the Welsh Government used to boost pedestrian crossing facilities.

Work on the new crossing, at the junction of Mumbles Road and Mayals Road, traversing Mayals Road, began on Monday and has caused long traffic queues in the area.

Swansea Council has said the pedestrian crossing will benefit schoolchildren walking to and from West Cross to Bishop Gore Comprehensive School.

Further crossing facilities will also be installed across Mumbles Road, at the bottom of Mayals Road, providing better access for pedestrians and cyclists onto the promenade.

But drivers have been unhappy at delays.

It took Frank Langford, from West Cross, "54 minutes" to cover a stretch of road that normally takes around one minute on Tuesday afternoon.

"They are down to single lane traffic by the petrol station," Mr Langford said.

"It took me 54 minutes to get to The Woodman from Sketty Lane.

"It was bumper to bumper from Sketty Lane right the way down to the Mayals."

Swansea Council confirmed that the temporary traffic lights would also be in place on Wednesday between 9.30am and 3pm.

The things drivers don't realise are illegal:

Mark Thomas, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: "We have made active travel one of our priorities in terms of enabling residents to choose alternative methods of transport to cars.

"This requires us to create new cycle infrastructure and extend existing routes.

"The latest work is part of our wider plans to achieve improved cycle and walking networks.

"An important aspect of these latest works will see a walking route for school children travelling between West Cross and Bishop Gore made much safer with the introduction of crossing facilities at the junction of Mumbles Road/Mayals Road.

"We are also installing crossing facilities at the location to give residents easier access across Mumbles Road onto the promenade."
