One million council workers offered 2.75% pay rise amid coronavirus pandemic

More than a million council workers have been offered a 2.75% pay rise amid the coronavirus emergency.

The National Employers, which manages pay for local authority workers in the UK, said it has offered staff an improved increase of 2.75% from 1 April 2020.

In addition, staff will gain an additional one day's leave which would increase the minimum entitlement from 21 to 22 days per year, plus public holidays.

The National Employers, who negotiate pay on behalf of 350 local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, made the offer to unions on Thursday.

The organisation said it hopes unions will accept the final offer as key workers continue to provide a critical support to communities during the national coronavirus emergency.

If given the green light, it will affect over 1 million employees.

The increase to the national paybill will be an extra £500.73million for local auhtorities - it will be backdated to April 1.

This pay offer will not apply to council chief executives, senior officers, teachers or firefighters, who are covered by separate national pay arrangements.
