A man has died and four others have been seriously injured during a New Year’s Day horror crash in south Manchester.
The collision happened on Yew Tree Road in Fallowfield , close to the Platt Lane junction, in the early hours of this morning when a Skoda Octavia - believed to be a taxi - collided with a black Mercedes C43 AMG at around 3.30am
The 59-year-old driver of the Skoda died in hospital after the crash.
His next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.
In total five other men were taken to hospital. Police say three of those men suffered serious injuries. A fourth is in a critical condition and is fighting for his life.
Yew Tree Road was partially closed this morning while investigating officers scoured the scene.
It has since been reopened.
Inspector Danny Byrne, of Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, is appealing for witnesses to come forward.
“This is a tragic incident in which one man died and five others were injured on what should have been a night of celebration – our thoughts are with them and their loved ones as our investigation continues,” he said.
“I would like to use this opportunity to ask anyone with information or dash cam footage to contact us as soon as possible.
“We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw the black Mercedes in the area prior to this collision.”
