One man is dead and another is missing after a boat overturned in Narooma on Tuesday morning, police say.

Police NSW said emergency services received reports a boat had overturned near the inlet at the Bar Rock Road, Narooma and two men entered the water about 6.30am.

"One man was retrieved and members of the public performed CPR on him prior to emergency services' arrival," police said.

"NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the man but he later died.

"The second man remains outstanding and officers attached to Marine Area Command have commenced a search, assisted by Marine Rescue, Westpac helicopter, Surf Life Saving Australia and South Coast Police District. Inquiries are continuing."

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics had been called about 6.30am and performed CPR on one patient but was unable to provide further details.
