One man dead, another in hospital under police guard after suspected shooting

Police were called to the property after reports of a gunshot in the area.

One man is dead and another man is in custody after a suspected shooting in Melbourne's south-east.

Police were told a man had been critically injured at a house in Calrossie Close, in Endeavour Hills, about 8:00pm, after a gunshot was heard in the area.

When police arrived at the scene they found a man dead.

A short time later, officers arrested a 22-year-old man.

He was taken to hospital and was under police guard following what Victoria Police called a "medical episode".

One local resident heard what he thought was a gunshot and when he went to investigate, he saw a man slumped over in a car and a woman screaming.

The witness told the ABC he raced inside, taking his partner to the back of his house, worried a gunman may be roaming the streets.

Then he telephoned the police.

Detectives returned to the street this morning and were looking for evidence inside wheelie bins and stormwater drains.

They also spoke to neighbours with CCTV.

The officers retrieved a jumper from a nearby reserve.

Residents said said there had been problems with drugs and robberies in the area in recent years.

The Homicide Squad is investigating and they do not believe it is a random attack.
