One lucky family could get to live rent-free on the Aran Islands for a year

One Irish family will be given the chance to live on the Aran Islands for a year - completely rent free!

The unique opportunity is being offered to any family with school-age children where they would have the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the Irish language and the local community on the Irish-speaking island.

They would be provided with a house on Inis Meáin, the middle of the three islands located off the west coast of Ireland, and their children could attend local schools from September.

The house is being offered by Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin, an organisation founded to help promote the Irish-speaking island and preserve the language.

The advertisement reads: "Is a rent free year on Inis Meáin your dream?

"This can now be your reality as Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin are offering a family with school age children the opportunity to move to Inis Meáin this September and to live rent free in a lovely modern house for the academic year."

The island has a preschool, a primary school, and a secondary school so is suitable for children of all ages.

For the adults, the Inis Meáin has a brand new remote working hub as well as other employment opportunities.

Speaking to Newstalk, Dara O'Madaoin, the manager of Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin said they are welcoming applications from families of any size and with any level of Irish.

"If they're fluent Irish speakers that's great," he said. "This is a thriving Irish-speaking community.

"But I suppose as long as they an affection to the language and are open to the language - and open to being part of a community where Irish is still the everyday language and the first language of the majority of the population - then that's all we really ask."

However, he said that the family would have to be able to commit to life on the island - which could mean being stuck there in stormy weather.

"Any family applying will have to think about the fact that they're not just going to be able to hop into the car and go wherever they want," he said.

"There might be days when the weather is bad and the boat can't sail, or the airplane can't come - and that's part of life here."

People flocked to the comments of the announcement on Facebook, with one woman writing: "If I were younger, I would jump at this opportunity."

Anyone interested in applying can contact Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin on cfinismeain@gmail.com and applications close on August 10.
