One lockdown rule set to stay after 'Freedom Day' as all other restrictions to lift

Face masks will not be ditched by the government on 'Freedom Day' - even if indoor mixing restrictions lift.

Scotland could see all major restrictions could scrapped on August 9, including rules on social distancing, household gatherings, and events.

But people could be wearing face masks - particularly in public spaces, like buses, shop and trains - for longer.

Nicola Sturgeon plans to move the whole country to Level 0 on July 19 and bin all "major remaining restrictions" three weeks later on August 9.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday, the First Minister unveiled her revised roadmap and told people to expect face masks to stay even when all legal measures are gone.

She warned that "basic mitigations" such as rigorous hand-washing and surface-cleaning will be here to stay into the autumn months.

She said: "Measures such as rigorous and regular hand washing, cleaning surfaces, and good ventilation will continue to be vital.

"And even if we lift the legal requirement, we may still advise keeping a careful distance from people outside our close contact groups, especially if they are not fully vaccinated.

"Also, at least for a period, we are likely to require continued wearing of face coverings in certain settings - for example, shops and public transport."

Testing and isolation will also stay in some form and workers will not be encouraged to pack back into offices.

And all adult Scots will have been offered at least one dose of a vaccine by July 18, with all adults having been offered a second dose by September 12.

Sturgeon confirmed plans to move the whole country to Level 0 on July 19, ending social distancing outside and cutting it to one metre indoors.

The SNP leader said that although cases are still rising, there is growing proof that vaccinations have broken the link between illness and hospitalisation.

But she warned that while restrictions could be eased in Scotland, the pandemic may continue to rage around the world.
