A member of the public has injuries after a truck caught fire and exploded on a busy freeway.

The incident happened on the West Gate Freeway at Port Melbourne at about 3pm on Friday.

Fire Rescue Victoria said a member of the public was injured by a piece of shrapnel that exploded from the truck when it was on fire.

Paramedics were called to the incident but no emergency treatment or transportation was required, Ambulance Victoria said.

Subsequent traffic delays impacted the Monash Freeway through the Domain Tunnel.
