One in hospital after package explodes in Boston as FBI launch probe

One person was injured when a package reportedly exploded at a University in Massachusetts.

The incident, which is being investigated by the FBI, happened at Northeastern University in Boston on Tuesday night.

According to reports, the package blew up shortly after being delivered to Holmes Hall on the university campus at 7pm.

One was said to have detonated when a staff member opened it.

Detectives have said that it is too early to tell whether the incident is terrorism related, according to local media reports.

It is thought the individual affected suffered minor injuries.

Police bomb squads attended the scene and university buildings were evacuated.

Steve Cooper from 7News wrote on Twitter : “Breaking: FBI Boston tells me they’re aware of 2 packages that exploded at Holmes Hall at Northeastern University tonight resulting in one injury…

“FBI currently coordinating with Boston Police. Sources say too early to say whether this is related to terrorism or not.”

Dan Kennedy, from the University's journalism school, wrote on Twitter: “This just in from #Northeastern: 'The scene is contained and the campus is secured.

“'NUPD is working closely with the Boston Police Department to secure the area.... One staff member sustained minor injuries due to an explosion. No students have been injured.'"

Police have asked people to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing and urged people to be vigilant and report any suspicious packages.

MIT Police said on Twitter: Explosion at Northeastern U. MIT Police are urging all MIT community to be cautious.

“Please report any suspicious packages.”
