One in four of all Covid-19 Bristol deaths were in care homes

One in four people who have died after contracting coronavirus in Bristol were living in a care home, new figures confirmed.

For the first time, the Office for National Statistics has released a clear breakdown of where patients have been dying.

And the statistics also revealed 5.3 per cent of all deaths that occurred in Bristol during the week ending April 10 were linked to coronavirus.

In Bristol, a total of 54 deaths have been registered where Covid-19 is mentioned on medical certificates.

The figures, published this morning (Tuesday, April 21), cover deaths which occurred up to April 10, and had been registered by April 18.

Of the 54 deaths across Bristol, 35 took place in hospital, 15 in care homes, two at home and two in hospices.

Across the South West, deaths registered in the week ending April 10, 298 mentioned coronavirus on the certificate, up from 155 the week before.

That represented a fifth (19.1 per cent) of all deaths registered in that week.

Overall, in the week ending April 10, there were 1,560 deaths registered - this was 40 more deaths than the previous week.

It was also 464 more than the five-year average for the same week (although where Easter falls will affect this figure), or 42.3 per cent higher than the average of 1,096 deaths.

The total for the week to April 10, or week 15, was the highest for this week of the year since published figures began in 2010.
