One in five British meat products 'contain meat not listed on label'

New study: it is estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Britons are infected with the virus by imported pork every year (Picture: Shutterstock)

One in five British meat products have tested positive for meat not listed on its label, according to a report.

Ham slices that contained no ham, pork sausages filled with beef and lamb doners without lamb were among examples found by inspectors.

The Food Standards Agency told the Mirror it ran tests on 69 items and 12 of them were contaminated with “unspecified meat or DNA species not declared on the label”.

Speaking as the study was published, experts raised concerns that consumers were still being misled about the meat they are eating six years on from the horse meat scandal.

Which? strategic policy adviser Sue Davies told the newspaper: “It is concerning if, six years on from the horse meat scandal, consumers are still being misled about meat they are eating.

"The Government and local authorities must clamp down on food fraud.”

In 2013 supermarket shelves were cleared after products from beef burgers to ready meals were found to contain horse meat.

A review was launched and concluded that better testing along supply chains should be conducted.

Those found to be mislabelling food can face fines or up to two years in prison.
