One in eight London homes at risk of flooding

One in eight London homes are in zones with a high or medium-risk of surface water flooding, according to new data,

This is twice the rate compared to the national average, and a far higher rate than any other region.

Despite representing just 7.4% of England’s total properties, London has the highest number of high-risk properties, accounting for almost 30% of all high-risk homes.

Due to climate change, it is feared that nationally the total number of properties at risk could rise from 4.6 million to 6.1 million by 2060, with high-risk properties potentially increasing by 66%.

Surface water flooding occurs when rainwater overwhelms drainage systems, and with many of the capital’s Victorian-era drains operating at capacity, heavy rainfall can lead to sudden flash-flooding on roads, estates and basements.

Nick Neale from Emoov said: “These regional figures highlight just how widespread surface water flooding is across England, and why targeted action is crucial.

“The data confirms the importance of being aware and being prepared for any eventuality this winter.

“People should know their local risk, check drainage and property defences, and consider practical measures to protect homes.

Mr Neale added: “As the winter weather sets in and the chance of unpredictable weather events is high. People should have an emergency plan and kit in place.

“By putting measures in place, such as a family evacuation plan and sharing emergency contacts, you are ensuring the safety of yourself and those around you.”

Guidance suggests an emergency kit should contain a torch, first aid kit, bottled water, blankets, clothing, and a mobile phone charger.

If a flood were to occur, you should get to higher ground, turn off utilities if safe, and use barriers to protect vulnerable areas.
