One in eight Irish motorists admit to speeding in recent weeks

One in eight drivers has admitted speeding during the last week, a survey revealed yesterday.

Men were more likely to have broken the limit with 15.2% stating they had driven faster than they should have recently compared to 8.4% of women.

And 12.1% of those behind the wheel admitted they had been speeding on at least one occasion before the AA Car Insurance survey was carried out.

AA director of consumer affairs Conor Faughnan said: “Speeding is a major problem on Irish roads and a direct contributing factor to many of the accidents we see on a daily basis from minor collisions up to and including those resulting in one or more fatalities.

“Despite knowing how dangerous this behaviour is, there remains a cohort of motorists who choose to ignore the message to slow down and, in doing so, put other road users at risk.

"While Ireland does have a problem with poorly set limits on many roads, motorists can’t decide for themselves which to adhere to and which to ignore.”

The survey also found mobile phone use remains a persistent issue – with 6.4% of those polled admitting to this over the past week.
