One held under charges of hurting religious sentiments in Haryana's Yamunanagar

YAMUNANAGAR: The members of some organisations held a protest outside Buria police station in Yamunanagar district on Saturday, demanding immediate arrest of persons who allegedly attempted to hurt religious sentiments by burning a religious flag displayed at the house of a person.

Satpal of Bibipur village in Yamunanagar district alleged that some persons burnt the religious flag displayed on top of his house.

On the complaint of Satpal, a case was registered against seven persons of Bibipur village under Sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 295-A (hurting religious sentiments) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Buria police station on Friday.

Satpal alleged several people threatened him and others with dire consequences if they displayed religious flags on rooftops of their houses and raised religious slogans in the village on April 6. He alleged a religious flag, which was displayed on the roof of his house, was also found burnt on April 6.

Following the incident, members of some organisations gathered in front of Buria police station and sat in protest demanding the immediate arrest of accused people named in the complaint.

Yamunanagar police deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Rajiv Kumar reached the protest spot and assured the protestors of the arrests of accused people. The protest ended after the DSP’s assurance.

In a press statement, Yamunanagar police said that the main accused identified as Wasim alias Tota has been arrested successfully and would be produced in the court on Sunday. The police said accused Wasim created controversy in the village and assaulted the people.

Buria police station house officer (SHO) said, "Tension had erupted between people of two religions in Bibipur village. Due to this, people of Hindu organisations gathered at the police station on Saturday and demanded the arrest of the accused people. After this, the police acted immediately and arrested main accused Wasim alias Tota. The police force has been deputed in the village in view of the security concerns. The arrests of other accused would be made soon."
