One-eyed Love Island star Theo Campbell explains challenges ahead of boxing debut

Theo Campbell is preparing to compete in the boxing ring for the first time - but will face a unique challenge as he battles an eye injury.

The former Love Island star will make his debut on the undercard of Martyn Ford's huge clash against the 'Iranian Hulk' which is set to take place on April 2.

Campbell suffered an eye injury which made him lose sight in one eye after an accident during a holiday in Ibiza.

And ahead of his boxing debut, Campbell has explained how having vision in just one eye has not phased him in the build-up and he plans to take the risk at exhibition level.

"Yeah it's going to be the biggest thing for me to overcome," Campbell told Mirror Fighting . "Only being able to see clearly out of one eye is definitely a disadvantage.

"If I was going to go pro I probably wouldn't be able to do it, but fighting someone at exhibition level against someone with similar experience with me I am willing to take the risk.

"The main issues I find are judging the accuracy while trying to hit the pads and stuff, whereas when you have two eyes your judgement is really good. Another thing I have noticed is that I used to be a good table tennis player.

"Ever since I can't see out of my eye I am terrible at things like that so that is the hardest part. But it is a challenge either way and hopefully I can inspire a lot of people if they have something working against them or a disability, to realise they can do it even if they have things against them.

"Hopefully it does inspire people because I do get a lot of people about eye injuries, but even with one leg or one foot you can achieve great things and I am hoping that is what I can do."

Campbell rose to fame during his time on reality TV dating series Love Island and has since accumulated a social media following of over 300,000.

The British star was on the fringes of competing with Team GB and has a vast wealth of experience in athletics at domestic level.

His rise to fame appeared to dent his chances of becoming a full Olympic athlete and it is unlikely he will ever make a return to athletics.

However Campbell has revealed his future could remain in fighting as he also pursues a future in MMA after signing a previous deal.

"Part of the reason I signed up to do this fight is because I am doing an MMA fight in June," Campbell continued. "That was my first offer and I thought yeah MMA might be a bit easier in terms of the grappling and the vision easier to take on.

"The schedule for that got pushed back as I got offered for this as well and I chose to do that one as I thought I might be better at that anyway. It made it time for me to do this as well and try to get my boxing skills up.

"Hopefully it all goes well in my eyes this is a great opportunity and experience that I can learn a lot from. Hopefully if it goes well it can be a stepping stone for the MMA fight if I win.

"Any other fights after that I will have to wait and see, I will have to see how these two go first and if I enjoy it then maybe but I have to try and see the outcome."

Campbell holds prior experience training in Muay-Thai having taken part in two training camps domestically and one abroad to enhance his skills.

He sees a future in MMA but is first hoping to make progression in the boxing ring as he awaits official confirmation of his opponent.

Several social media stars will also feature on the card including fellow Love Island contestants Jack Fincham and AJ Bunker.

The 30-year-old is excited for the prospect of taking part in the event has called on the fans to watch the whole card including the intriguing spectacle of the main event.

"Hopefully the fans will get to see some knockouts and that is my target," Campbell concluded. "Whoever I go in with I have three rounds to do it and that is the reason for the short rounds.

"There is going to be some good fights for sure and the whole event is going to be worth going too including well-known people. It is going to be a great event with a lot of people they are going to recognise.

"The main event is great and it is going to be a spectacle in itself watching them two giants go at it, if I wasn't taking part in it I would definitely be going along to watch."
