Now, former Newcastle supremo Mike Ashley has reportedly moved to the front of the queue.
Quantuma, the administrators currently overseeing the sale of Derby, have been in advanced talks with the Sports Direct mogul over the past 48 hours, according to t he Telegraph .

It is thought that a preferred bidder is set to finally be announced 'imminently'.
But the news hasn't gone down well with all County supporters - especially one high-profile fan.
Singer Niall Horan, a lifelong Derby fan who found fame with global superstar band One Direction, tweeted his reservations about the possibility of Ashley taking over his team.
He wrote: "please no!" before adding in a further tweet: "If the administrators accept his bid, it is based only on proof of funds and nothing else."
He was then involved in something of a spat with another famous Derby fan, Team GB Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport.
He replied: "Why not? We need to be ran like a sustainable business for the next few years. We need to live within our means.
"If he’s in it to make money, the club needs to be in the ( Premier League ). At least we’ll have a club at the end of the (season)."
Horan continued the debate, saying: "Oh yeh he’s going to run it as a sustainable for a FEW YEARS and just leave is he? Ask Newcastle fans what a few years looks like."
Davenport replied once more with the following: "Newcastle is a different story. He went in and promised the world and milked the club. We are a cow that at the minute does not produce milk. We are the Debenhams of the High Street!! Don’t get me wrong, he’s not my first choice but if he’s the only choice, I’m good with that."
A successful bid would mark a quick return to football for Ashley, who was at the helm on Tyneside for over a decade despite his unpopularity among Newcastle fans.
Derby are currently rock bottom of the Championship after being deducted 21 points over the course of the season but are battling admirably under manager Wayne Rooney.
The former Manchester United and England star has overseen a string of excellent results to give the Rams a fighting chance of completing the greatest of great escapes.
They are unbeaten in their last four, having won three on the spin before mounting a spirited comeback at Reading last week to draw 2-2.
Next week marks a year in charge for Rooney.
