- The song was originally intended as a nostalgic reflection on the passing of time, but Horan, alongside songwriters John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, revised it after learning of Payne's death.
- Horan described the writing process as a 'crazy experience' but felt it was a necessary tribute to celebrate Payne's life and happy memories, despite the initial sadness.
- “End of an Era” will be the twelfth and final track on Horan's third solo album, Dinner Party, which is scheduled for release on 5 June.
