One person has died and six others — including five police officers — have been rushed to hospital after a suspected carbon monoxide leak in Sydney’s north-west this morning.
Emergency crews were called out to Riverstone on the corner of Garfield Road and Railway Terrace just after 9.15am on Tuesday, responding to reports of a gas leak inside a restaurant.
When they arrived, they found several people in the building overcome by the gas.
One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while police officers and a member of the public were all taken to Blacktown Hospital in stable condition.

NSW Police confirmed that five officers and a member of the public were being treated in hospital, and another person had their symptoms checked by paramedics on site. Specialist emergency teams, including hazmat firefighters, intensive care paramedics and even a helicopter responded to the scene.
Authorities say the gas is suspected to be carbon monoxide. Hazmat crews remain on site, working to find where the leak started.
Superintendent Adam Newberry from NSW Police explained, “A number of people have been exposed to some kind of gas. I understand a number of people appear to have been affected by carbon monoxide poisoning. This is a developing situation or emergency.”
NSW Ambulance confirmed that specialist doctors and intensive care paramedics were called in to help those affected.
Emergency services are still on scene investigating the source of the leak, and the area remains closed off for safety. Anyone with concerns is urged to avoid the site while crews work.
