KOLKATA: A 60-year-old resident of Diamond Harbour was critically injured when she fell off a private bus while alighting from it at the Rabinda Sadan bus stop around 5pm on Friday.
The victim, Reba Das, has been admitted to SSKM Hospital. The driver has been arrested for rash and negligent driving and the bus seized by cops from the Hastings police station. “The woman was still climbing down when the conductor of the Dhulagarh-Sealdah bus signalled to the driver to start moving. The conductor, too, has been detained,” said an investigating officer.
Around the same time a day earlier, another person, Jayanta Adhikary from Sukanta Nagar off Salt Lake, died after he came under the wheels of a private bus on Lenin Sarani. Police said Adhikary was boarding the bus when the vehicle suddenly started moving and he fell off it. He was run over and the driver fled with the bus, police said.
An analysis of bus accidents by the fatal squad of Kolkata Police have proved that several accidents are either due to passengers falling off while boarding or alighting buses or slipping off the footboard. “We will begin a special drive soon. The aim is to inculcate the best practices,” said a senior officer in South guard.
