One dead in holiday road crash in southern Tasmania

Police have asked drivers to avoid the area.

A teenager is dead and another is in a serious condition after a two-car crash at Dunalley, about 60 kilometres east of Hobart.

Police said an 18-year-old from southern Tasmania died at the scene.

He was a passenger in the car being driven by an 18-year-old woman, also from southern Tasmania, who was taken by helicopter to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Sergeant Paul Devine said a four-wheel drive travelling south and a hatchback travelling north collided about 2:00pm on the Arthur Highway near the entrance to the Bangor Winery.

"It appears at this stage that the silver hatchback veered to the wrong side of the road," he said.

"Obviously things like inattentiveness, fatigue, alcohol ... all that will be looked into but at this stage I couldn't say what caused them to veer onto the wrong side of the road."

The driver of other vehicle was not injured but his female passenger was taken to hospital by road.

Both are from interstate.

Traffic had to be diverted along a dirt track in a paddock while emergency services worked to clear the scene.
