One dead and two police officers seriously injured after high-speed Strathmerton crash

One man has died and two police officers are seriously injured after a van collided with a police vehicle at high speed at Strathmerton in Victoria's north.

The van and police vehicle crashed at the Stokes Road intersection on the Murray Valley Highway about 12pm today.

The driver and sole occupant of the van, a man yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The two male officers, a first constable and detective sergeant, have been airlifted to a separate hospitals with serious upper body injuries.

A man in his 60s was taken to the nearby Shepparton Hospital and another man in his 30s was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Langdon said it appeared the "tragic" crash involved the van travelling at high speed.

Both officers were both stationed nearby at Cobram.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are still establishing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

"This is such a typical thing that occurs on country roads and the roads throughout Victoria at the moment, nobody's immune from it," he said.

Motorists travelling in the area may have to take alternative routes, with investigators still at the scene of the crash.
