One dead after two fishermen washed off rocks in WA's South West

One man has died after two men were washed off rocks while fishing in Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park.

A 45-year-old man has died after he and another man were swept off rocks while fishing at Conto Beach, south of Margaret River.

Police received a report just after 8:00am on Saturday that two men were in the ocean.

The Surf Life Saving helicopter was in the area and dropped in a rescue swimmer to help them.

A Margaret River Marine Rescue jet ski arrived and took the rescuer and one of the men, who was still conscious, to the beach.

"And whilst the helicopter kept observation on the other body, on the other person, the jet ski went out and recovered that person who was deceased," Superintendent Geoff Stewart said.

Both men were from the town of Harvey.

The survivor, 35, was recovering in Margaret River hospital.

Superintendent Stewart said police would prepare an investigation for the coroner, including a look at what equipment the men had with them.

He said the message for people fishing off rocks was to be safe, ensure they have all safety equipment and be aware of the ocean and weather conditions and potential risks.
