One Chelsea change Frank Lampard should make for Sheffield United clash

Chelsea are in a real run of form as they head into their next Premier League clash this weekend.

Following their 3-0 win over Rennes in the Champions League on Wednesday night, the Blues are now unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions.

With Saturday being the final game before the international break, Frank Lampard will no doubt not want to make many changes to his starting XI.

In the Champions League, teams are allowed five substitutes through the 90 minutes and Lampard used that well to rest players on Wednesday.

Thiago Silva, Tammy Abraham, Hakim Ziyech, N'Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell were all taken off once the game was dead and buried for the Blues.

However, one player who got another 90 minutes was Timo Werner, and the Germany international could well do with a break.

The 24-year-old has started all seven Premier League matches and three Champions League games so for the Blues, plus the Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Werner was supposed to be on the bench for the win over Burnley, however replaced Christian Pulisic after he picked up a hamstring injury in the warm up.

Despite his brace against Rennes on Wednesday, Werner started to fade as the match went on and it could be time for him to finally get a rest.

That would be tough, having scored seven goals in all competitions, but he can't be expected to feature in every match as he might burn out.

“Of course, some days I’m tired because of the [number] of games I’ve played," Werner said ahead of the Rennes match.

"But I did it last year as well and these days it’s normal to play so many games.

“Every player needs a rest sometimes and the international break [may come] at the right [moment], so it’s good to rest there [during international duty].

“In the end, it’s good to play every game. I’ve had a lot of fun playing every game so that’s not a problem for me.”

If Werner is given a rest at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, then it would be a good chance for Callum Hudson-Odoi to come back into the starting XI.

After more transfer interest in Hudson-Odoi over the summer, the England international has struggled for game time, having only started one Premier League match and one Champions League game.

Hudson-Odoi would want to take the chance to impress should he get it this weekend, and with Lampard now pushing the 4-3-3 formation, he is the likely candidate to step in.

Kai Havertz is expected to miss the game after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of the match against Rennes and is now self-isolating.
